The trees are dressed in gorgeous autumn colors and Florissant Valley is a lovely spot for viewing – we are so fortunate!
Thanks to everyone who participated in CONNECT on Wednesday. Hosting our secondary school partners is such an important piece in maintaining good communication and therefore working together to ensure the success of students who come to study at Florissant Valley. Each year, I look forward to CONNECT – congratulations go to Tom Cupples and his team for putting together a great event.
We had a delightful experience in the campus theater this week with the performance by The Core Ensemble of Tres Vidas. The talented chamber music trio and singing actress presented a sample of the show they perform across the country telling the story of three Latin American women: Frida Kahlo, a Mexican painter; Rufina Amaya, the sole survivor of the massacre at El Mozote, El Salvador in 1981; and Alfonsina Storne, an Argentinian poet. Thanks to Dr. Paul Higdon for bringing this rich cultural experience to Florissant Valley.
Today Florissant Valley hosted the Missouri College Advising Corps for a program, “Community College as a Pathway to Postsecondary Attainment”. Guidance counselors from around the area heard about both St. Louis Community College and St. Charles Community College. Teresa Huether was here to talk about our work with Achieving the Dream and Dennis White provided an introduction to the Smart Start course. Dr. Joe Worth took the lead on getting this organized and showing off the campus.
As you make your plans for next week, stop by the Humanities Building on Monday for Portfolio Day. This is a very important opportunity for our students to show off their talents and their work to visitors from transfer institutions from around the country. While this gives us a chance to see all of this talent on display, it is also a great time to congratulate students in this art show format.
Election Day is Tuesday, November 6 – be a responsible citizen and vote. Information from Human Resources regarding College employees’ rights regarding time off of work to vote will be coming soon.
Around the Campus
- Please continue to support the Archers. Soccer and volleyball will soon give way to men’s and women’s basketball (which is played at Forest Park). Keep up with the Archers’ schedule here.
- Let’s give the FV Maintenance/HVAC and Housekeeping (day and evening) crews a big hand for qualifying for the third quarter Safety Award. To qualify, each department must complete three safety training topics, complete three department inspections and have zero injuries during July, August and September. Congratulations!
Next week is the annual meeting of the Missouri Community College Association in Kansas City, Mo. As I will be away Wednesday – Friday, I will be back to blogging the following week.
