Spring and Geese

Spring is such a beautiful time on the Florissant Valley campus – this is a time of the year that reminds me of how fortunate we are to have this lovely environment as our professional home!

This is also the time of the year that our Canada geese become more active as nests are built to provide a home for eggs.  There are several spots on campus that are hosting particularly aggressive male geese as they guard the females and their eggs.  We are monitoring all of those nests and blocking them off but please give the males a wide berth as you walk in their direction.  If you can go a different way to your destination, choose that. You will also notice that we have a goose herding dog on campus, moving the birds away from population centers.

If a goose comes after you, hold something – a purse, a notebook, or bag of some kind between you and the goose.  Use that same strategy for a goose approaching from the air. Running will encourage them to chase you.  This nesting period is really pretty short but we will be living with it for the next several weeks.

Next week, we’ll honor a member of the Florissant Valley family with a special award.

The 37th annual David L. Underwood Memorial Lecture Award announcement starts at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 12. The award was first presented in 1976 to honor former STLCC Dean of Instruction David L. Underwood, who was known for his love of education and his tireless dedication to further the educational mission at Florissant Valley. The announcement will be made on the second floor of the Instructional Resources building. Hope to see you there!
